Jhargram Raj College is a long-established centre of higher education in Jhargram, West Bengal. Established in 1949, it is affiliated with Vidyasagar University and recognised by the University Grants Commission under Sections 2(f) and 12B.
Origins and early history
The college was founded through the support of Raja Sir Narasingha Malla Ugal Sanda Deb, who, according to the college?s official history, donated one lakh rupees and land following a request from Pramathanath Banerjee, then Vice-Chancellor of the University of Calcutta. Dr Pabitra Kumar Sen, the first principal, also helped establish the institution through the Khaira Endowment Fund.
The college was transferred to the Government of West Bengal in 1953. It was initially affiliated with the University of Calcutta before becoming affiliated with Vidyasagar University in 1985.
Academic programmes
Jhargram Raj College offers undergraduate education in Arts, Commerce and Science. Its postgraduate programmes began with Chemistry in 2005, followed by Zoology in 2006 and Bengali in 2008. The college also highlights departmental research, seminars and workshops as part of its academic life.
Campus facilities and student life
The college describes a naturally green campus with science and computer laboratories, a library, smart classrooms, hostels, internet access, sports facilities and a multi-gym. Student support includes scholarships, competitive-exam guidance, skill-development programmes, self-defence training and extension and community work.
